Product-market fit is an incomplete frame for a platform whose purpose is not primarily commercial.
The argument
Product-market fit sits at the centre of how digital platforms are taught, funded and assessed. It asks whether a product satisfies a market well enough to sustain growth, and it treats that market as the measure of whether the product is working.
Niche media platforms complicate that measure. Many are mission-driven, serve a specific community or cultural domain, and make decisions that a purely market-facing reading would treat as inefficient. A platform can be doing exactly what it exists to do while looking underdeveloped against product-market fit.
The paper proposes product-mission fit as a complementary frame, asking whether product decisions serve the platform's stated purpose and the community it is accountable to, alongside whether they serve a market.
The case
The paper draws on a longitudinal analytic autoethnography of Oriire, an early-stage niche media platform operating in a high-trust knowledge domain, which I founded in 2020 and still run.
This is part of a wider doctoral project on product development as a communicative process in founder-led niche media platforms.
